Wedding Photography at The Bothy
Located in Glasgow's leafy west end, The Bothy is a restaurant based in Ruthven Lane serving traditional and modern Scottish cuisine. Whilst the whole restaurant can be booked for larger weddings on select dates, the Scullery space is popular for intimate micro weddings of up to 24 guests. I've photographed quite a few weddings in this west end wedding venue now, so wanted to share a few photos along with a special wedding photography package I've put together for weddings the Bothy.
Hey! I'm Karen! I'm a wedding photographer based in Glasgow's west end and I specialise in natural, unobtrusive coverage of relaxed and informal weddings. I team this documentary coverage with as many group photos as you'd like with your friends and family, and a few creative portraits that will make the most of the light and the details of your chosen wedding venue. Every package includes a planning meeting and venue visit so that I can personalise your coverage to be the best fit for you and your unique wedding day.
The light in the Scullery room in the Bothy is perfect during the day, as there's large windows along one side of the room. I typically position myself on the window side as the view from this angle is bathed in soft light. During the evening reception below, I photographed speeches from the same position so I would not end up including my reflection in the photo, and I think this angle looks better with the wallpaper rather than a dark window. The light in the Scullery in the evening is pretty good, so I did not use flash for candid photos like the one below.
Where to Have Group Photos?
I've used both the space in the Scullery, the Bothy garden and the space at the entrance to the Bothy. If you have booked the garden, this space can work well and the cosy Scullery is great if it's raining or cold (or both).
Where to Have Couple Portraits?
There's plenty of space at the Bothy for your couple portraits, but if you're up for a short walk on your wedding day, this opens up many more possibilities. I've listed a few options below for you to consider, along with walking distance.
1. Ruthven Lane
Bothy Garden & Entrance | 0 minute walk
Directions: There's lots of options here, and what we can do on the wedding day will depend on whether you have exclusive use of the garden or not. The garden features colourful planters and greenery, as well as some urban vibe backdrops. I have typically used the entrance and Ruthven Lane area for wedding day couple portraits.
2. Victoria Crescent Lane
Victoria Crescent Lane | 3 minute walk
Directions: Victoria Crescent Lane can be found by leaving the Bothy and turning left. Walk up Ruthven Lane until you reach a bend to the left. Follow this as it bends to the right and a short distance ahead you'll find a pretty lush green clearing that is perfect for portraits.
3. Ashton Lane
Ashton Lane | 2 minute walk
Directions: Leaving the Bothy, head towards Byres Road and then walk up along the side of Iceland. After a few yards you'll emerge in the cobbled backstreet that is Ashton Lane. There's a carpet of fairy lights overhead that may or may not be on depending on the time of day.
4. Grosvenor Terrace
Grosvenor Terrace | 7 minute walk
Directions: Leaving the Bothy, head towards Byres Road and then turn left. Walk up Byres Road until you reach a flight of stairs on your left next to the traffic lights. There an area of grass and trees here that's nice for couple portraits, shown below at an autumn wedding.
5. Botanic Gardens
Kibble Palace & Glasshouses | 10 minute walk
Directions: Leaving the Bothy, head towards Byres Road and then turn left. Walk up Byres Road, crossing at the junction to head into the Botanic Gardens. As you take the main path, Kibble Pace is on the right.
